PAT McLEAN-SMITH
Hello! Welcome to PMS Creations
Art created to make you think, react, remember...or simply smile
FABRIC ART
I’ve been drawn to creating with my hands from early childhood. Later, as a seamstress, I became intrigued with the intimacy of fiber/textiles; their textural, richness, grid of the weave, as well as the complex cultural roles of this medium.
There is a culturally ingrained preciousness to fabric. When creating the illusion of three-dimensional space on the canvas, I employ painting techniques with fabric, such as light/shadow, figure/ground, and perspective. Layers reveal destruction, change, and rebirth.
MIXED MEDIA
My mixed-media art works are a collage of cultures collected over the years to tell new stories. There is not always a plan when I begin. I work on several pieces at once to allow ideas to percolate. Each artwork consists of improvisational aspects. The stitch pierces of paper and textiles, acrylic and oil paints. Also using textured fabrics, yarn and felts, creates another visual language. Paper may be sewn to fabric contrasting hard and soft. Textiles hang like tapestries to form a sculpture or are quilted. Brush and pen connect to paper or fabric.
CREWEL EMBROIDARY
Crewel embroidery is so satisfying! It gives you all the sensory pleasure of other types of surface embroidery, and, on top of that, there’s the speed of crewel. You might not be stitching any faster than you normally do, but the picture sure develops more quickly!
My work has taken a new direction in hand embroidered fiber art. I believe there is something about the process that complements and enhances my natural way of creating art.
CROCHET DOLLS
Fiber is a wonderfully dynamic medium. Free from any notion of patterns but armed with a lifetime of technique. My dolls, in particular whether they are artistic creations or toys given to children, always transcend the materials they are made of to become more than objects. They are named, talked to, imbued with personalities, and sometimes seem to have a will of their own. As art, dolls have many of the same qualities as sculptures and yet they can be held, moved, and many can be posed. The process of crocheting is instrumental as a driving force in her art.
